When it comes to the practice of Sabbath, we must stop. We have to stop doing all the things, so we can begin to orientate our lives around Jesus.
This may be the hardest thing for me to do. Stopping is tough. And it’s tough because there are so many hours in a day and only so many days in the week. Yet, we see the Lord continually stop.
Why is stopping so important?
Let me suggest this – you can’t notice what God is doing when you are continually in movement.
Stopping gives perspective, it gives awareness, and a chance for you to breathe. If Sabbath is all about centering a day around the Lord, stopping gives us time to prepare to let the Lord in.
As I write this, I’m struck with the irony… I’m horrible at Sabbath. I just like to live a full life, and I am earnestly working toward a fuller Sabbath approach. Like anything, it is a muscle that takes time. I am not going to shame myself. I’m not going to beat myself up. I am just going to keep making more and more space for God to work in and through the time I intentionally give as an offering to Him.
So, sometimes I Sabbath in pockets. Sometimes I sabbath in half days. Sometimes I just take a couple hours in the morning.
However you are leaning into the practice of Sabbath, be encouraged to stop doing everything and focus on the one thing that matters more than anything.
Together in Rest!
