Who Are YOU Serving?

If you’re anything like me, you might have song lyrics swirling around in your brain most of the time. So when I began thinking about what the concept of serving means to me, I immediately thought of Bob Dylan’s song, “Gotta Serve Somebody.”

Now, I don’t know all that much about Bob Dylan, besides him having a pretty significant impact in the music industry for his song writing. So please understand that I’m not insinuating he was someone to look toward for any kind of biblical direction. *Just a little disclaimer.* 🙂

However, what I can say is that he was certainly on to something when he wrote the lyrics to that particular song.

To avoid going down a rabbit hole, I’ll summarize it for you. The point he was trying to make is that no matter who you are, what you do, or where you’re at in life, you’re going to find someone to serve. Albeit God or someone or something.

Who are you serving?

Being a Christ follower means you are choosing to live your life to serve God. So what does that look like?

Although there are many facets to serving God, it’s clear to see in Jesus’ life and ministry on earth that serving others went hand in hand with serving His Father.

Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Service is how we can truly express our love for God, one another, and His creation. It’s through service that we can lean into the gifts God gave each one of us and share them with others.

I think a big misconception is that serving is limited to tasks within the church, which is not true at all. (But I’ll pause here to encourage you to find a ministry to serve in at church if you haven’t already). 😉 Serving encompasses every aspect of our lives.

You can serve God by serving others with your actions, resources, and love.

Take a look at the following scriptures:

Serving Others With Our Actions“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Isaiah 1:17

Serving Others With Our Resources“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:16

Serving Others with Our Love“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12

If you’re unsure where to start, always seek out the Lord first for guidance. There’s a way for you to serve if you’re willing.
